Dream Builder: A New Era of Commercial Space Design

Michael Tu's Award-Winning Design Merges Functionality and Aesthetics

Michael Tu's Dream Builder project, an innovative commercial space design, has won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2022. This unique design, inspired by nature, ecology, and urban visioning, represents a fresh take on the Bauhaus essence of functionalism and people-oriented design.

The Dream Builder project is a unique cold chain enterprise headquarters located in Chiayi City, Taiwan. The design draws inspiration from various concepts, including nature and ecology, cultural and creative management, urban visioning, and sustainable environmental protection. The result is a colorful, dreamy factory that leads the region towards better development.

Michael Tu's design stands out for its functionalism, faithfulness to materials, and people-oriented approach. The freshness valued by the cold chain operation system is transformed into a new look and break-through design. The design also incorporates the Bauhaus essence of 'less is more' and prioritizes shape and function.

The Dream Builder project was realized using a variety of materials, including stones, architectural concrete, spliced unpainted wood panels, wooden grains, modern concrete grinding stone floorings, various indoor eco-friendly paints, outdoor paints, and metal. A semi-modular construction method was applied, with huge external iron frames stacked to form a surrealistic sense. The integration for the exterior also used several surface materials in the primary color of gray.

The design's unique properties extend to its interaction and functionality. The experienced designer hoped to create a design that combines the cold chain industry functionality, value, and urban economic effects with aesthetics. A colorful appearance that symbolizes packaging boxes by modularization is built by drawing inspiration from the logistics and packaging procedures.

Despite the challenges posed by the narrow trapezoidal hinterland in the rezoning area, the designer managed to create a design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The location of the factory was moved backward, and the headquarter was rotated with traffic flows and floor plans rearranged to accommodate the terrain and surrounding scenery.

The Dream Builder project is a testament to Michael Tu's innovative approach to design, merging functionality and aesthetics in a way that is both unique and inspiring. The project's success is a testament to the power of design to transform spaces and create new possibilities for urban development.
